Changes to School Meal Costs, Uniform Options, and School Day Schedule

Dear Parents/Carers,

We would like to inform you about some changes that will be implemented at Stretford High School as of September 2024.

Firstly, the cost of school meals will be increasing from £2.30 to £2.60 (a main meal, a drink, and a snack). This increase is due to the rising cost of food, which has been significantly impacted by the cost of living crisis.  While we understand that this may be a burden on household expenses, we have made this decision after careful consideration. We have not increased the cost of school meals for the past 6 years, and our priority is always to provide nutritious and affordable food for our students.

Additionally, we will be introducing a new option to our school uniform policy. From September 2024, students will have the choice to wear fully black trainers as school footwear. This change is based on feedback from our students, who have highlighted that choosing a versatile and cost-effective footwear option would be beneficial.

Furthermore, we will be making some adjustments to the school day schedule. We will be extending our break time by 5 minutes, allowing for a longer, more relaxing break. This change is in response to feedback from our students, who have expressed a preference for a longer break.

We understand that change can be challenging, and some of these adjustments may not be well-received by everyone. However, we believe these changes are necessary to ensure the sustainability of our school meal service, the affordability of our school uniform, and the well-being of our students.

Thank you for your understanding and support.

Student Activities and Achievements

On a more positive note, our students have been actively engaged in various activities and have shown exceptional dedication and talent.  For instance, our Year 8 students have been participating in a gymnastics unit, demonstrating their coordination, flexibility, and balance.

Our Year 10 students recently visited the University of Manchester, where they interacted with undergraduates, PhD students, and esteemed lecturers and professors. This visit provided valuable insights into university life and the academic journey.

Our Youth Travel Ambassador Team has also been busy. They are organizing a ‘No Car Day’ on Friday, May 24th, to encourage active travel within our school and community.

In terms of reading, our librarian, Miss Hodge, has recommended a few new books for our library. These include ‘Oliver Twist’, ‘The First News’, ‘Tempus Clade’, ‘The Saga of Darren Shah’, and ‘The Boy in the Tower’. We are grateful to Read for Good, an organization that donated all these books to our library.

We a lovely extended weekend!

Yours sincerely,

Nic Doward
