PE Key Stage 3

KS3 students (Years 7, 8 and 9) follow schemes of learning based around Physical Education National Curriculum framework. This is complimented by implementing aspects of the AQA GCSE PE specification.

Year 7 have a focus on Physical Training which will give them an understanding of how health and fitness are effected by their habits in everyday life. Throughout the year students will gain an understanding of different components of fitness and also types of training that they can use to support their own growth and improvement. These ideas are taught through a variety of sports and promote the idea of application to different scenarios.

Year 8 have the thread of Sports Psychology running through their lessons. They will break down skill in to different forms, understand how natural ability can underpin performance and take a look at how the brain processes information when the pressure is on. This deeper understanding of the mind in these situations will promote a resilience in our students to become managers of their own health.

Year 9 concentrate on Anatomy and Physiology, this allows students to understand what is happening inside their body during movement and they also have an understanding of how muscles and systems in the body are performing. This deeper appreciation of the body will allow students to understand different reactions to exercise and also push themselves further. This has a knock on effect when trying to compute a feeling of injury/illness compared to an uncomfortable feeling. Again, the hope is to produce young people that are more resilient to the conditions they find themselves in and more understanding of the reactions the body can have.

All topics are taught the through the following sports in each year group:

  • Handball
  • Football
  • Softball/Rounders
  • Circuit Training
  • Badminton
  • Basketball
  • Athletics
  • Dance

As a department we like to adapt to each cohort that attends our school so we may add in sports if the demand is there from a group.

The students will also complete a Health Related Fitness run every term and compete in Intra House competitions. There are also opportunities to experience obscure sports in small blocks throughout the year such as spikeball, kinball, kabaddi, dodgeball and many more.
