Key Stage 3 Overview
KS3 students (Years 7, 8 and 9) follow schemes of learning based around the Art, Craft and Design National Curriculum framework. Activities that develop skills in The Formal Elements of Art have been built into all scheme for learning. Pupils will study a range of artists, designers and craftspeople from across the world and a range of eras. Pupils will explore a varied range of media, techniques and processes.
All KS3 classes groups are taught in mixed ability groups.
Year 7

Term 1 | The Formal Elements of Art / Aboriginal Art | Line Shape Tone 3D Form Colour Pattern Texture / Exploring the context and history of Aboriginal Art and its characteristics. |
Term 2 | Aboriginal Art (continued) | Creating a personal and symbolic final piece of a fish using Aboriginal symbols and symbols that represent you. |
Term 3 | Natural Form | Observational drawing of fruit in a range of media. Exploring artists and designers that are inspired by natural forms. |
Year 8
Year 8 Curriculum Overview | Themes | Unit content |
Term 1-2 | Pop Art – Roy Lichtenstein | Studying the work of Roy Lichtenstein and using comic superheros as a starting point. Pupils will design their own comic book cover and in the style of Roy Lichtenstein using primary colours. |
Term 2-3 | African Masks | Exploring the culture, art and artefacts of Africa. Pupils will learn about the symbolic meaning of African masks and design a mask with a personal meaning. They will develop their masks into cardboard relief. |
Year 9
Year 9 Curriculum Overview | Themes | Unit content |
Term 1 | Graphic Design | Introduce the briefs. You have been hired to design and make one of the following: Makeup packaging A trainer food packaging aimed at children Or a game cover You will explore fonts, graffiti and existing products. You will be required to combine this visual information to create your own design ideas for your chosen product. |
Term 2 | Doodles in Design | Students will be introduced to the contemporary artists Sam Cox and Ery Burns. Following this students will participate in a range of workshops exploring different printmaking mediums. Students will develop design ideas and create a mixed media final piece. |
Term 3 | Indian Art | Students will be introduced to the traditions and art work of India. Students will explore Henna designs, Rangoli patterns and a range of media techniques. Themes such as pattern and colour will be explored. Students will develop design ideas and create a mixed media final piece. |
