Welcome Back: A Positive Start to the New Year

Dear Parents and Carers

SHS News

I would like to extend a very warm welcome back to all our students and families. I hope you had a restful and joyful Christmas break and feel refreshed for the start of this new term. It has been wonderful to see the school corridors buzzing with energy again as we begin the spring term together.

Setting High Expectations

As we move into this new term, we are focusing heavily on consistency and high expectations. Whether it is punctuality, uniform, or engagement in the classroom, these standards are not just about discipline; they create an environment where every child feels CARED for, safe, focused, and ready to learn. By maintaining these high standards, we ensure that no learning time is wasted and that every student has the best possible chance to succeed.

Supporting Year 11: The Road Ahead

This is a pivotal term for our Year 11 students. To ensure they feel supported and focused, every Year 11 student is currently participating in 1:1 progress meetings with their form tutors.

These sessions are designed to:

  • Reflect on current progress and data
  • Identify specific areas for improvement
  • Set achievable targets tailored to their individual goals

With mock exams and the final GCSEs approaching, these conversations are vital. They help students take ownership of their learning and transform “exam stress” into a clear, manageable action plan.

Working Together: How You Can Help at Home

We know that the best results happen when school and home work in partnership. You can play a massive role in your child’s success by:

  • Establishing Routines: Help them create a calm, quiet space for study and ensure they are getting enough sleep
  • Revision Support: Encourage them to start revision early rather than “cramming.” Ask them to explain a topic they’ve learned to you—it’s one of the most effective ways to solidify knowledge
  • Wellbeing: Keep an eye on their stress levels and encourage regular breaks

To help you stay connected with your child’s learning, our Term 2 Curriculum Booklets have now been sent out. These booklets are a fantastic resource that outline:

  • Exactly what your child is learning in every subject this term
  • How they will be assessed
  • Specific tips on how you can support their learning at home

When parents/carers understand the curriculum, it allows for more meaningful conversations at home about schoolwork. Knowing what is coming up helps students feel more prepared and confident in their lessons.

Thank you for your continued support and for being such an integral part of our school community.

Let’s make this term a brilliant one.

Mrs Nic Doward
